CBSE Syllabus for Class 12 Physics 2020-21: Chapter-wise

CBSE Class 12 Physics Unit 1: Electrostatics

In this unit, you will be learning about electric charges. Electrostatics is a separate branch of Physics that deals with the phenomena of slow-moving charges or charges that have no acceleration or are stationary. You will study how these slow-moving charges exert forces on each other and that causes their motion. There are 2 Chapters included in this unit.

Chapter 1 – Electric Charges and Fields: In this chapter, you will learn what are electric charges and their basic properties such as addition, conservation and quantisation. You will also learn about conductors and insulators and their role in carrying the electric charges. Other topics include electric field, Coulomb’s Law, Gauss’s Law, electric flux, and electrostatic forces.

Chapter 2 – Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance: Here, you will learn more about electric charges and their properties. The main topics of the chapter include electrostatic potential, conductors and insulators, capacitors, series and parallel combinations of capacitors and energy stored in a capacitor.

CBSE Class 12 Physics Unit 2: Current Electricity

Now as you have learned about conductors and insulators in the previous unit. Now, you will study how current flows through them. You will be able to easily relate to the concepts that you will learn here as we use electricity everywhere in our houses, schools and workplaces. There is only 1 Chapter in this unit.

Chapter 3 – Current Electricity: In this chapter, you will learn about resistors. Ohm’s Law is also introduced in this chapter which is a very important part of Physics. Other important topics of the chapter include electric current and its properties, series and parallel combinations of resistors, Kirchhoff’s Law, Wheatstone Bridge, and Potentiometer.

CBSE Class 12 Physics Unit 3: Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism

This Unit gives you an introduction to magnetism and how electric current can give rise to magnetism. You can easily see how these topics are related to the concepts you have studied in the previous units. First, you need to understand how charges move and what happens when they are in motion. Then, you will study how their motion produces a magnetic field. There are 2 Chapters in this unit.

Chapter 4 – Moving Charges and Magnetism: The three introductory topics of this chapter are the concept of the magnetic field, Oersted’s experiment and Biot – Savart law. Other topics include Ampere’s Law, the force between two parallel conductors, and moving coil galvanometer.

Chapter 5 – Magnetism and Matter: In this chapter, you will learn about types of magnets, permanent and electromagnets, solenoid, dipole in a uniform magnetic field, Gauss’s Law, the magnetism of the earth, and how materials have magnetic properties.

CBSE Class 12 Physics Unit 4: Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents

In this Unit, you will understand how electric current and magnetic fields produce a force which is known as Voltage. There are many devices that work on the principle of electromagnetic induction such as electric cookers, transformers and washing machines. There are 2 Chapters in this unit.

Chapter 6 – Electromagnetic Induction: This chapter provides an introduction to the concept of electromagnetic induction. You will learn concepts like Faraday’s laws, Lenz’s Law, induced EMF and current, and Eddy current in this chapter.

Chapter 7 – Alternating Current: In this chapter, you will learn what is alternating current and resonance. A new concept of Power is introduced in this chapter as you will study about power in AC circuits. The working of AC generators and transformers is another important topic from the exam perspective.

CBSE Class 12 Physics Units 5: Electromagnetic Waves

In this Unit, you will study how the electromagnetic waves are produced as electrons oscillate in an electric field. This is a different and interesting concept as you will learn about the electromagnetic spectrum in this unit as well. This chapter will help you score more marks in the competitive exams. There is only 1 Chapter in this unit.

Chapter 8 – Electromagnetic Waves: The chapter begins with the topic of displacement of current and the definition of electromagnetic waves and their properties. You will also learn about the types of electromagnetic waves which includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, X-rays, gamma rays.

CBSE Class 12 Physics Unit 6: Optics

Optics is a special branch of Physics that deals with the phenomena of light, its behaviour and properties. In this unit, you will gain a perspective on how light interacts with matter, what is ray optics and wave optics. There are 2 Chapters included in this unit.

Chapter 9 – Ray Optics and Optical Instruments: In this chapter, you will first learn about the phenomenon of reflection and refraction of light. You will also study how light refracts through spherical lenses. Then, you will study prism and the spectrum of light. Then, you will study optical instruments that work upon the phenomenon of reflection and refraction of light.

Chapter 10 – Wave Optics: This chapter will teach you about how light is considered as a wave with the help of Huygen’s Principle. Young’s Double-slit experiment is a very important topic in this chapter and is crucial for exams preparation. Other topics of the chapter include polaroids and polarization.

CBSE Class 12 Physics Unit 7: Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter

This unit explains how light can behave both as a wave and as a particle. This is because of a special kind of particle present in light called a photon. You must understand the phenomenon of reflection and refraction of light in order to understand this unit effectively. The unit contains only 1 Chapter.

Chapter 11 – Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter: In this chapter, you will study various theories and practical evidence that prove that light has dual nature. These theories are provided by Einstein, Hertz and Lenard. You will also study the photoelectric effect.

CBSE Class 12 Physics Unit 8: Atoms and Nuclei

In this unit, you will learn about the components of an Atom and its Nucleus. You will study how these components were discovered and what are the properties of these elements. This unit will help you understand the very basics of matter. There are 2 Chapters in this unit.

Chapter 12 – Atoms: In this chapter, you will learn about the structure of atoms and why an atom is able to maintain a structure. Then, you will study Rutherford’s Model and Thomson’s Model of an atom and the atomic spectrum of hydrogen.

Chapter 13 – Nuclei: In this chapter, you will learn about the structure of the nucleus of an atom. It includes topics such as atomic mass and components of the nucleus, the size of the nucleus, nuclear binding energy, radioactive decay, alpha decay, beta decay, and nuclear fission and fusion.
