Important Topics for HC Verma Concepts of Physics Part-1 Solutions Chapter 17: Light Waves

Huygens’ Principle

Huygen’s principle defines that each and every point on the wavefront is considered as a cause of secondary spherical wavelets which disperse in the direction of the speed of the light. For all the secondary wavelets, the new wavefront is the only tangential surface.

Optical Path

The optical path is defined as the route that the light follows while travelling an optical medium. By using folded optics the physical length of an optical appliance can be decreased to less than the length of the optical path.

Diffraction of Light

Diffraction is a phenomenon that takes place when a wave encounters a barrier or an aperture. It is described as the winding of waves around the corners of a problem or through an aperture into the region of the geometrical shadow of the aperture. The bending object or aperture efficiently becomes a secondary foundation of the propagating wave.

Coherent and Incoherent Sources

The cause of light that produces light waves of the same frequency, the same wavelength in a constant phase difference is known as the coherent source of light. Laser light emits coherence, it is an example of a coherent source.

The wave that emits light with random and frequent changes and that doesn’t have constant phase difference is known as the incoherent source. Tungsten filament lamps and ordinary fluorescent tubes are examples of incoherent light waves.

Scattering of Light

Scattering is defined when the energy waves like light and sound are produced to depart from a straight route due to defects in the medium. The wave energy that is reflected in various directions which are not easy to calculate is a unique type of scattering.

Limit of Resolution

The limit of resolution is an amount of ability of the objective lens to detach in the image adjacent details that are present in an entity. It is the distance between two points in an entity that is just determined in the image. The limit of resolution of an optical system is eventually limited by diffraction by the slit. Thus it is not possible for the optical system to form a perfect image of a point.
