## Important Topics for HC Verma Concepts of Physics Part-2 Solutions Chapter 45: Semiconductor and Semiconductor Devices

Energy Bands in Solids

In a particular isolated atom, the electrons available in each orbit have certain energy linked with it. But in the case of solids, all the atoms are nearby to each other, so the energy levels of outermost orbit electrons are affected by the atoms surrounding it. The combination of these various energy levels is known as the energy band.

p-type and n-type Semiconductors

A p-type semiconductor consists of a larger number of holes than electrons. This permits the current to pass along the substance from hole to hole but only in a similar direction. Semiconductors are generally made from silicon. Silicon is a constituent that has four electrons in its outer shell.

An N-type semiconductor is a type of substance that is used in electronics. It is prepared by adding an impurity to a pure semiconductor such as germanium or silicon. The impurities that are used may be phosphorus, antimony, arsenic, bismuth, or some other chemical element.

The Density of Charge Carriers and Conductivity

The carrier density is generally achieved theoretically by mixing the density of states over the energy range of charge transporters in the material.

p-n Junction

A p-n junction is a crossing point or a boundary between two semiconductor substance types, specifically the p-type and the n-type, inside a semiconductor. The p-side or we can say the positive side of the semiconductor has additional holes and the n-side or the negative side has additional electrons.

p-n Junction Diode

A p-n junction diode refers to a two-electrode semiconductor device that permits the electric current to flow only in one direction while lumps the electric current in the opposite direction. The p-n junction, which is created when the p-type and n-type semiconductors are combined, is known as the p-n junction diode.

Logic Gates

Logic gates are the simple constructing blocks of any digital system. It is an electronic circuit consisting of one or more than one input and only one output. The connection between the input and the output is built on a definite logic. Based on this, logic gates are termed as AND gate, OR gate, NOT gate, etc.
