## Important Topics for HC Verma Concepts of Physics Part-2 Solutions Chapter 44: X-Rays

Production of X-rays

X-rays are produced due to unexpected speed loss of fast-moving electrons when they strike and act together with the target anode. In this procedure of slowing down, more than 99% of the electron energy is transformed into heat and less than 1% of energy is transformed into x-rays.

Continuous and Characteristic X-rays

Continuous X-rays are formed when free moving electrons electromagnetically act together with nuclei, however, characteristic X-rays are created during the electron transition methods that happen when an inner shell electron is discharged from an atom.

Soft and Hard X-rays

X-rays with high photon energies, generally above 5–10 keV and below 0.2–0.1 nm wavelength are known as hard X-rays. However, the X-rays with lower energy and longer wavelength are known as soft X-rays. Thus, soft X-rays are easily absorbed in air.

Moseley’s Law

Moseley’s law is an experiential law regarding the characteristic x-rays discharged by atoms. In brief, the law defines that the square root of the frequency of the discharged x-ray is nearly proportional to the atomic number. The law had been revealed and put out by the English physicist Henry Moseley in 1914.

Bragg’s Law

Bragg’s law is also known as Wulff–Bragg’s condition. It is a special case of Laue diffraction that provides the angles for coherent and incoherent sprinkles from a crystal lattice. When X-rays fall on an atom, they create the electronic cloud move, as does any electromagnetic wave.

Uses of X-rays

X-rays are a type of electromagnetic radiation that can flow through solid objects, involving the body. X-rays enter various objects more or less related to their density. In medicine, X-rays are used to sight images of the bones and various structures in the body.
