Amines

Amines are defined as the functional groups and compounds that consist of a basic nitrogen atom along with a lone pair. Classification of Amines

  • Secondary Amines: These types of amines contain two organic alternatives like alkyl, aryl, or both are bound to the nitrogen along with one hydrogen. 
  • Tertiary Amines: In this type of amine nitrogen has three organic alternatives. Trimethylamine is an example of tertiary amine which has a fishy smell.

Properties of Amines

  • The aliphatic amines which are available in the lower group are gaseous in nature and consist of fishy smell.
  • Primary amines that contain three or four carbon atoms are liquids at room temperature whereas the atoms with higher groups are solids in nature.
  • Aniline and other arylamines are usually colourless. However, due to atmospheric oxidation, they get coloured when stored in open.
  • With the help of water molecules, lower aliphatic amines can form hydrogen bonds. These types of amines are soluble in water.
  • Higher amines are generally insoluble in water. Organic solvents such as benzene, ether, and alcohol are soluble in amines.
  • In comparison to amines, alcohols have higher polarity and they also form stronger intermolecular hydrogen amines.
  • In primary and secondary amines, there is intermolecular association due to the presence of two hydrogen atoms but in the case of tertiary amines, there is no intermolecular association due to the absence of free hydrogen atoms.
  • Primary > secondary > tertiary > is the order of the boiling point of amines.

Halides

The binary compounds of which one part is the halogen atom and the other part is an element. A radical is less electronegative than that of halogens which form chloride, bromide, fluoride, and astatine. Mostly halides are salts. Using silver nitrate solution many halide compounds are tested such as KBr, KCl, and Kl.

Precipitation will be formed, when halogen reacts with silver nitrate solution and it also differs in colour depending upon the kind of halides, such as silver Fluoride. Silver iodide with green precipitate, silver chloride with a white precipitate.

Uses of Halides

Metal halides are generally used in a high-intensity release known as metal halide lamps, like modern street lights. They are also useful in greenhouses or in rainy climates to additive natural sunlight. Metal halides are more energy-efficient than mercury-vapour lamps and they also have better colour rendition.

In photographic films and papers, silver halides are very useful. Halides are also very useful in solder paste, mainly as a Br or Cl.
