Introduction to Arithmetic Progression (AP)

There are various types of series and progressions that we come across in our daily lives, the successive value of which may be obtained by multiplying a common number or adding a common difference or by other methods.

In arithmetic progression, every successive term of the progression is evaluated by adding a number d to the previous number. This d is also termed as a common difference.

The common difference in an arithmetic progression can be negative, positive or zero.

The common notations used are ‘a’ for the first term, an for nth term, and d for the common difference.

General Form of an AP

a, a+2d, a+3d…is the general form of an AP.

nth Term of an AP

The nth term for a given an AP with common difference d and first term a is given such that,

an=a+(n-1)d

an is the notation for a general term while am or l denotes the last term of the AP. 

Sum of first n terms of an AP

It is denoted by Sn and is given such that,

Sn=n[2a+(n-1)d]/2

Also, S=n(a+l)/2

The sum of first n positive integers can be given as,

S=n(n+1)/2

The nth term of an arithmetic progression can also be given as the difference between the sum of n terms and sum of (n-1) terms of the same, that is, 

an=Sn-Sn-1
