Conventional Sources of Energy

  • Fossil fuels: Fossil fuel is a fuel made by natural processes, like the anaerobic decomposition of buried dead organisms. Hydrocarbons, primarily coal, fuel oil, or natural gas, come under this category.
  • Thermal power plant: In this method, large amounts of fossil fuels are burnt in thermal power stations, which heats water to produce steam, and it further runs the turbine to generate electricity.
  • Hydropower plants: In this method, a hydropower system uses a dam to store the river water at a height. Water is then released from the height, which flows through a turbine. The turbine starts spinning and then, in turn, activates a generator to produce electrical energy from kinetic energy.

Non-Conventional Sources of Energy 

  • Biomass: Biomass is an animal or plant material that is used for producing energy. The energy can be generated by using organic matter like crops, wood, waste from food crops, forest residues, etc. In this method, a direct combustion system burns the biomass material in a furnace to generate hot gas, which is converted into electric energy.
  • Wind Energy: It is a process that uses wind to generate electricity. Here, the rotatory motion of the windmill turns the turbine of the electric generator. It is an environment-friendly and efficient source of renewable energy.
  • Solar energy: Solar energy uses the energy from the Sun to convert it into electricity. In this method, Solar panels convert the Sun’s rays into electricity by using the photons of light from the Sun and thus excites electrons in silicon cells.
  • Tidal energy: It is a form of hydropower that converts the tidal energy obtained from tides into electricity. Wave energy also works on this principle.
  • Ocean thermal energy: Ocean Thermal Energy produces electricity by using the temperature difference between deep cold ocean water and warm tropical surface waters.
  • Nuclear energy: Nuclear energy uses nuclear reactions to generate heat, which is then used in steam turbines to produce electricity.
