What is Living?

We all are familiar with the fact that all living organisms reproduce, grow, and metabolize. But when we look at the microscopic kingdom, the actual meaning of life is somewhat blurred. For example, viruses are mainly a nucleic acid that is threatened by a protein coat. They display no distinctive characteristics of living organisms such as reproduction, until and unless it is inside a host.

One more “organism” that limits between the living and non-living are referred to as Prions. These are basically misfolded proteins that can replicate by creating other healthy proteins to misfold. These objects are answerable for producing diseases such as Spongiform Encephalopathy, deadly familial insomnia, which are almost always fatal. In conclusion, the kingdom between the living and the non-living varies even now as the meaning of “life” is unclear.

Characteristics of Life

Living organisms display unquestionable signs of life – such as reproduction, growth, and metabolism. Higher creatures such as humans’ platform awareness – where we become aware of our environment. In the same way, awareness may be noticeable in many inferior forms of life such as bacteria and protozoa. When these creatures immerse food or react to their surroundings, it is done mainly to ensure survival.

Diversity in the Living World

In reply to the pure number of creatures exposed to date, a system of regulating names was executed. Binomial nomenclature allocates a two-part scientific name to a creature. Botanists and zoologists survey set principles and standards when allocating a scientific name to an organism. For example, plant names are allocated based on the philosophies and criteria established by the International Code for Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN). In the same way, animal names are allocated on the source of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN).

Flora and Fauna

Fauna is all of the animal life that is available in a specific region or time. The consistent term for plants is referred to as flora. Flora, fauna, and other forms of life such as fungi are together mentioned as biota.
