Important Topics for NCERT Biology Exemplar Solutions Class 11 Chapter 11 – Transport in Plants
Transportation in Plants
Transportation in plants is the procedure of transferring water, minerals, and food to all other parts of the plant body. Transport in plants happens at three levels including Short distance transport of materials from one cell to another and long-distance transport of liquid within xylem and phloem.
The relation of plant and water illustrates how plants control the hydration of their cells, including the collection of water from the soil, its transportation within the plant, and its loss by evaporation from the leaves. Over microscopic distances, for example, across semipermeable membranes, it is compelled by inclines in water potential.
Long Distance Transport of Water
Long-distance transportation of water from roots to leaves happens by the greater part of the flow, the movement of liquid compelled by a pressure transformation at opposite ends of a channel, the xylem vessels, or chains of tracheids. The greater part of flow moves the complete solution, water plus minerals, and any other solutes mixed in the water.
The procedure of movement of water through a plant and its vaporization from floating parts is known as transpiration. Water is essential for plants but only a small amount of water taken up by the roots is used for development and metabolism.
Uptake of Mineral Nutrients
The uptake of mineral nutrients refers to the natural procedure in which all the necessary minerals come into the plant’s cellular material, naturally following the same pathway as water. The uptake of mineral nutrients happens at both the roots and the leaves.
Transport of Minerals Nutrients
The procedure of transport of mineral nutrients is carried out by the plant cells in the following ways:
- Active Absorption
- Passive Absorption
- Transport in Phloem
- Movement of Mineral Ions
- Pressure Flow or Mass Flow Hypothesis.
Phloem is vascular tissue that transfers food through the plant. It does this through a sequence of tubes that connect sugar sources to sugar sinks. Phloem can be prepared of sieve cells, sieve tubes, and sieve plates.
