Important Topics for NCERT Biology Exemplar Solutions Class 11 Chapter 2 – Biological Classification

Five Kingdom Classification

The living organisms are classified into five different kingdoms including Protista, Fungi, Animalia, Plantae, and Monera on the source of their features such as cell structure, mode of reproduction, mode of nutrition, and body organization.

Kingdom Monera

Kingdom Monera is reflected as the most basic group of organisms and monerans are most plentiful of all. It usually includes unicellular organisms with a prokaryotic cell organization. They don’t have well-defined cell structures comprising the nucleus and other cell organelles.

They contain prokaryotes which comprise of the species like the cyanobacteria, mycoplasma, archaebacterial, and bacteria are a few members of this kingdom.

Kingdom Protista

All unicellular creatures are positioned under the Kingdom Protista. This kingdom is a very large group consisting of at least 16 phyla. Many species of this kingdom are the major producers in the aquatic ecosystem and some are accountable for severe human diseases like malaria.

Kingdom Fungi

Fungi are a group of entities that are found everywhere from air, water, land to the soil. They are also found in plants and animals. Some fungi are too small and others are enormous – almost spreading over a thousand acres. And even though fungi look like plants, they are in fact primarily related to animals.

Kingdom Animalia

Kingdom Animalia comprises all the eukaryotic, multicellular, heterotrophic organisms. These animals cannot organize their own food and thus rely on other organisms for food. Also, the organisms fitting to kingdom Animalia don’t have cell walls. There are about 800,000 various species and 36 distinct phyla have been recognized under kingdom Animalia. All these species reveal different levels of organization in structure.

Kingdom Plantae

Kingdom Plantae contains all the eukaryotic, multicellular plants that execute photosynthesis to make their food. These plants have rigid cell walls prepared for cellulose and pectin. They retain organelles like chloroplast and chlorophyll that enable photosynthesis. Generally, these are non-motile in nature.
