Important Topics for NCERT Biology Exemplar Solutions Class 11 Chapter 9 – Biomolecules

What are Biomolecules?

All the carbon-based mixtures that are set up in or created by organisms and are important to a biological procedure are known as biomolecules. Examples of biomolecules comprise proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids. Even molecules such as metabolites are reflected as biomolecules.

Enzymes

Most enzymes exposed to date are proteins. There are even nucleic acids that display features of enzymes known as ribozymes. Enzymes are related to proteins, where it owns a primary structure as well as secondary and tertiary structures.

In the modest sense, enzymes work on a “lock and key” basis. The model takes the similarity that the lock is the enzyme and the substrate roles as the key. A substrate is a particle operated on by an enzyme, therefore, only the correctly sized substrate will fit in the keyhole of the lock.

Macromolecules

Macromolecules are very large particles, generally consisting of thousands of atoms or more. Proteins and lipids are macromolecules that originate in living organisms. Synthetic macromolecules consist of plastics and carbon nanotubes.

According to mammalian systems of biomolecules, there are three major types of macromolecules including:

  • Lipids
  • Proteins
  • Nucleic Acids
  • Carbohydrates

Structure of Proteins

The structure of a protein refers to the three-dimensional organization of atoms in an amino acid-chain molecule. Proteins are polymers, exactly polypeptides that are generated from sequences of amino acids, the monomers of the polymer. A single amino acid monomer may also be known as a residue representing a repeating unit of a polymer.

Metabolic Basis for Living

Metabolic pathways include the extraction of energy by breaking molecules and using this energy to produce the building blocks. Meanwhile, it includes the combination of metabolites, it is also termed as the biosynthetic pathway. For example, amino acids turn into proteins.

Enzymes

Enzymes are biological molecules that suggestively speed up the rate of fundamentally all of the chemical reactions that happen within cells. They are important for life and offer a wide range of significant functions in the body, such as helping in digestion and metabolism.
