Important Topics for NCERT Chemistry Exemplar Solutions Class 11 Chapter 11 – The p-Block Elements

p-Block Elements

The p-block elements are usually found on the right-hand side of the periodic table. They comprise the boron, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and fluorine families in addition to the noble gases.

Group 13 Elements: The Boron Family

The group 13 elements contain six elements including boron (B), aluminium (Al), gallium (Ga), Indium (In), thallium (Tl), and element 113.

Some Compounds of Boron

Some of the important compounds of boron are borax, orthoboric acid, and boron hydrides.

Group 14 Elements

Group 14 elements in the p-block consist of carbon (C), silicon (Si), germanium (Ge), tin (Sn), lead (Pb), and flerovium (Fl). Each of these elements contains only two electrons in its outermost p orbital and each has the electron configuration of ns2np2.

Anomalous Behaviour of Carbon

Carbon is peculiar from the other elements of the group. This behaviour is noticed in carbon primarily due to its:

  • High electronegative
  • Small size of the atom
  • High ionization enthalpy
  • Unavailability of d-orbitals

The reasons behind this anomalous behaviour of carbon are because of the following reasons:

  • Catenation
  • Small size of carbon
  • Tetravalency of Carbon

Allotropes of Carbon

There are more than a few allotropes of carbon including Diamond, Graphite, Lonsdaleite, C60, C540, C70, Amorphous carbon, and single-walled carbon nanotube.
