Hydrocarbons

A hydrocarbon refers to an organic compound containing completely hydrogen and carbon in it. Hydrocarbons are generally referred to the group 14 hydrides.

Classification of Hydrocarbons

Hydrocarbons are normally classified into four main categories including alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and aromatic.

Alkanes

Alkanes refer to the organic compounds that contain completely single-bonded carbon and hydrogen atoms and the absence of any other functional groups. Alkanes have the overall formula CnH2n + 2 and can be segmented into the following three groups including the linear straight-chain alkanes, branched alkanes, and cycloalkanes.

Alkenes

Alkenes are a period of hydrocarbons, generally the unsaturated compounds with at least one carbon-to-carbon double bond. An additional term used to define alkenes is olefins. Alkenes are more reactive than alkanes due to the existence of the double bond.

Alkynes

An alkyne refers to an unsaturated hydrocarbon consisting of at least one carbon-carbon triple bond. The modest acyclic alkynes that are only having one triple bond and no other functional groups form a homologous series with the general chemical formula CnH2n − 2.

Newman Projections

A Newman projection is considered very useful in alkane stereochemistry. It envisions the conformation of a chemical bond from front to back, with the front atom denoted by a dot and the back carbon as a circle. This type of illustration clearly explains the detailed dihedral angle between the proximal and distal atoms.

Isomerism

Isomerism is the occurrence in which more than one element has a similar chemical formula but diverse chemical structures. Chemical compounds that have the same chemical formulae but vary in properties and the arrangement of atoms in the molecule are known as isomers.
