Motion in a Straight Line

A body is considered to be in motion if it changes its place with respect to time.

Types of Linear Motion

The linear motion can be of two types:

  • Non-Uniform linear motion with non-zero acceleration
  • Uniform linear motion with zero acceleration

Uniform Motion in a Straight Line

A body is considered to be in a uniform motion if it moves in a straight line covering the same distances in the same intervals of time. A body is considered to have uniform acceleration if the rate of change of its velocity remains continuous. For example, if a car travels at a speed of 60 km/hr then it will cover a distance of 1 km/minute.

Non-uniform Motion in a Straight Line

A body is considered to have a non-uniform motion when the velocity of a body changes by unequal amounts in the same intervals of time. While in movement, the rate of change of its velocity changes at various points of time. For example, a boy hitting out a football. It might cover 4 meters in the first hit, 6 meters in the second hit, 9 meters in the third hit and so on as per the velocity applied by the boy.

Displacement

Displacement is the variation in the place of a body. The magnitude of displacement between similar points is proportional to the path length.

Average Speed

Average speed is considered to be the ratio between the total path length crossed to the time taken.
