## Mechanical Properties of Solids

Mechanical Properties of solids define features such as their strength and resistance to distortion. It defines the capacity of an object to endure the stress applied to that object. Examples of mechanical properties include hardness, strength, elasticity, plasticity, ductility, abrasion, brittleness, malleability, and toughness.

Stress and Strain

The stress is the response on the object, because of load, and described by load per area of cross-section. The strain is the variation in sizes of the object, described by a change in length by actual length.

Hooke’s Law

Hooke’s Law is a law of mechanics and physics revealed by Robert Hooke. This theory of elasticity says the extension of a spring is proportionate to the load pushed to it. Many resources follow this law as long as the load does not beat the material’s elastic limit.

Stress-strain Curve

A stress-strain curve is a graphical method to display the reaction of a substance when a load is pushed on it. It also represents a comparison between stress and strain. Stress is the ratio of the load or force to the cross-sectional area of the substance to which the load is applied.

Elastic Moduli

An elastic modulus is also known as the modulus of elasticity. It is a quantity that methods an object or material’s resistance to being distorted non-permanently when a stress is applied to it.

Applications of Elastic Behaviour of Materials

Elastic behaviour of the material is used in the construction of bridges, beams, pillars, columns, etc. For example, while constructing a crane, used to lift loads, it is kept in mind that the leeway of the rope does not beat the elastic limit of rope.
