  • Haloalkanes and Haloarenes:

When a hydrogen atom in (aliphatic or aromatic) compounds is replaced by the halogens, it results in the formation of haloalkanes and haloarenes.

Haloalkanes are the resulting compound when a hydrogen atom is removed from aliphatic hydrocarbons and replaced with the halogen atoms. They are also termed as alkyl halides.

Haloarenes are formed if we remove a hydrogen atom from aromatic hydrocarbons and replace it with the halogen atoms. These are also known as aryl halides.

  • Classification of Haloalkanes and Haloarenes:

Haloalkanes and haloarenes can be classified in three ways :

  1. Based on the number of halogen atoms
  2. Compounds at which halogen atoms are attached to an sp3 hybridized carbon.
  3. Compounds at which halogen atoms are attached to the sp2 hybridized carbon.
  • Nature of C-X bond-

As you know, halogen atoms are more electronegative than the carbon atom. That means halogen atoms have more electron attracting power than the carbon atoms, which produces inductive effect and carbon-halogen bonded atoms get polarised. Carbon atoms bear the partial positive charge whereas halogen atoms have a partial negative charge.

Since, you know that the elements, having more electronegative power, can attract the shared electrons more. As a result, carbon-halogen bond length will also increase from C-F to C-I.

  • Methods of Preparation:

There are typically four types of preparation techniques involved in the formation of haloalkanes and haloarenes. Let’s have a look at these types:

  1. From alcohol
  2. From hydrocarbons.
  3. By halogen exchange reaction.
  4. By the addition of halogens and hydrogen halides.
  • Polyhalogen Compounds:

Polyhalogen compounds are those types of compounds which are having more than one type of halogen atom(elements existing in group 17 of the modern periodic table). These compounds are used commonly in the agriculture and industrial sectors. Polyhalogen compounds are widely used for many purposes such as pesticides, anaesthetics, and solvents, etc.

Some of the well-known polyhalogen compounds are:

  1. Methylene chloride.
  2. Chloroform
  3. Iodoform
  4. Tetrachloride
  5. DDT
  6. Carbon tetrachloride
  7. Benzene hexachloride.

  • The first set of questions are of MCQ types. They are further categorized into two types: MCQ 1 & MCQ 2. This section has 43 NCERT Exemplar problems in total. Type 1 consists of 31 questions while type 2 has 12 Exemplar problems. The questions are generally from the different stereochemical reactions such as SN1, SN2, nucleophilic & electrophilic substitutions.
