• Diffraction: It is the phenomenon of bending of light across the corners of an obstacle.

• Emission, Absorption, and Scattering: Matter interacts with radiation by three processes.
1. Emission:  an accelerated charge radiates alongside lost energy.
2. Absorption: At an amount of the electromagnetic wave the charge gains energy.
3. Scattering:  acceleration of charge by the incident electromagnetic wave that radiates in every direction.
• Polarization: If the vibrations of a wave are present in simply one route in a plane perpendicular to the course of propagation, the wave is stated to be polarized or plane-polarized. The phenomenon of restricting the oscillations of a wave to simply one route inside the transverse plane is called the polarization of waves.

Polarizer:   Device that is used to polarize the unpolarized light passed through it.

• Optical Activity: When plane-polarized light passes through sure substances, the plane of polarization of the light is rotated approximately the route of propagation of light through a positive angle. This phenomenon is called optical activity or optical rotation and the material is said to be optically active.
• Polaroid:  Polaroid is thin commercial sheets which employ the property of selective absorption to provide an extreme beam of plane-polarized light.
• Uses of Polaroid- It can be used in sunglasses and camera filters, in windscreens, in window panes of aeroplanes, In LCDs, etc.
