Important topics for NCERT Physics Exemplar Solutions Class 12 Chapter 12

Let’s  have a look at some important topics and definitions related to this chapter:

  • Atoms  – Atoms are the smallest unit of the chemical element. It is made up of three tiny particles: protons, electrons, and neutrons, etc. Protons are positively charged particles, electrons are negatively charged and neutrons do not contain any electrical charges at all.
  • Electron orbits – Electrons occupy shells to revolve around the nucleus of an atom. They can revolve in any direction but in a limited area or orbits. Each orbit has a name. Each shell can contain a fixed number of electrons. The first shell contains 2 electrons. The second shell contains 8 electrons and so on. The general formula for the nth shell is 2 (n^2) electrons.
  • Rutherford atomic model – Rutherford atomic model is also known as the nuclear model. Why the nuclear model? Because this was the first atomic model at which the nucleus is considered as its core element. This model states that the atoms are mostly in a hollow space, electrons revolving around the positively charged nucleus in fixed orbits.
  • Bohr’s model of hydrogen atom  – Bohr’s model of hydrogen atom states that there is a  positively charged nucleus comprises (protons, neutrons) and negatively charged particle electrons revolving around the nucleus in different energy levels. These levels are termed as shells. He assumes that electrons revolve in different circular orbits and that orbits with a certain radii were allowed  This produces the absorption spectrum.

There are many more significant topics, definitions, and concepts in this chapter which you need to go through once. This chapter will help you in adding up your score in the examination.

Exercise Discussion Of  NCERT Exemplar Class 12  Physics Solutions Chapter 12: Atoms

  • As discussed above, there are 29 total questions in this  NCERT Exemplar Class 12 Physics Solutions Chapter 12. It has 13 MCQ type questions, 5 VSA type, 5 SA type, and the rest 6 questions are long answer type questions.
  • The first set of questions are of MCQ type in which you need to pick up the one correct answer among 4 options. They are subcategorized into MCQ 1 and MCQ2. MCQ 1 contains 7 questions while MCQ 2 contains 6 questions. Most of the questions are from Bohr’s model. Some questions use the concepts of the absorption spectrum.
  • The second set of questions are very short answer types (VSA) in which you need to answer in one or two lines. These questions are reason-based. This section has 5 questions and generally uses a concept of Bohr’s model and emission spectrum. In question no. 12.17 you need to verify the Bohr’s formula on given proton and electron ratings.
  • The next set of questions are short answer types (SA). This section also has 5 questions which will brush up your knowledge on the concepts like emission spectrum, Alpha particles scattering, and spectral lines, etc.
  • The last set of questions is long answer types (LA). This section has 6 questions. These questions are quite tricky in comparison to VSA and SA type and need a deep understanding of concepts like emission spectrum, Bohr’s theory. Question no. 12.27 is from the Auger process at which the kinetic energy of an auger electron is to be calculated.
