  • Bar magnet – 

A bar magnet is the rectangular piece of object, made up of ferromagnetic substances. A narrow in size, having permanent magnetic properties. This magnet has two poles: a  north pole and a south pole. They are permanent magnets and do not require powered electric current to preserve their magnetism. They also form loops inside the bar magnet and in the air as well.

  • Magnetism and gauss’s law –

Gauss law for magnetism states that divergence of magnetic field B is zero. The gauss law for electrostatics is  different from magnetism gauss law. In electrostatics, there is an idea of electric charges, but in magnetism, magnetic charges do not exist, that’s why magnetic monopoles do not exist.

  • Earth magnetism –   

It refers to the magnetism produced in the earth or the magnetic field generated by the convection currents. These convection currents are produced due to the motion of ferromagnetic substances like iron, nickel in the earth’s outer core. These convection currents carry streams of charged particles that create magnetic fields.

A natural process “geodynamo” involved in the formation of convection currents.

That’s why it is also known as the geomagnetic field.

  • Magnetization and Demagnetisation –

Magnetization is the process in which a   magnetic substance gets magnetized(on insertion in a magnetic field). The substances get magnetized temporarily or permanently.

 The methods used to magnetize the substances are:

1.Single touch method

2.Double touch method

3.Electrical method of magnetization.

 On the other hand, demagnetization is the process of removing the magnetic properties of the magnet.

The magnetic properties can be totally or  partially destroyed by these methods:

1.By heating

2.By rough handling

3.By induction

4.By passing electric current

  • Magnetic properties of materials –

 Generally, five types of magnetic materials are there:

1 – Paramagnetic materials.

2 – Diamagnetic materials

3 – ferromagnetic materials

4 – Antiferromagnetic materials

5 – Ferrimagnetic materials 

Each exhibit different types of magnetism related to their properties. Let’s have a look at these different magnetism one by one.

Paramagnetism

Paramagnetism results from an unbalance of  spin pairs of electrons

Diamagnetism.-    

Diamagnetism  results from an unbalance of orbital pairs of electrons

Ferromagnetism –

Ferromagnetism refers to materials (such as nickel or iron)  that can retain their magnetic properties when the magnetic field is removed.

Ferrimagnetism – It’s a type of permanent magnetism that occurs in solids. In physics, a ferromagnetic material is the type of material that has clusters of atoms, having opposite magnetic moments. The opposing moments are spontaneous and unequal in nature.

Antiferromagnetism

Similar to ferromagnetism and ferrimagnetism, this magnetism also occurs on solids such as MnO. The adjacent ions behave as tiny magnets. This type of magnetism is usually related to the spin of electrons and align in a    spontaneous manner with neighbouring ions.

  • As mentioned above, there are 25 total questions in NCERT Exemplar Class 12 Physics Solutions Chapter 5. There are 10 objective questions, 5 very short answer questions, 5 short answer questions, 5 long answer questions.
  • The first set of questions, MCQ 1 are objective type questions where you need to know the concepts of magnetization, types of magnets, the magnetic moment of an electric dipole and earth magnetism. This section has 5 questions in total.
  • The second set of questions is MCQ 2, which are again objective questions. Under this section you need to solve the problems on the solenoid, finding the angle of dip and the problems on the concepts of magnetism. This section also has 5 questions.
  • The next set of questions are very short answer type questions. Questions are generally based on the concepts of paramagnetism, diamagnetism, and ferromagnetism. This section has 5 questions.
  • The fourth set of questions are short answer type questions which will brush up your knowledge of gauss’s law of magnetism, ampere’s law and the knowledge of bar magnets. This section also has 5 questions.
  • The last section is long answer type questions. These questions are quite tough compared to the very short and short type questions. This section also has 5 questions. In Question no. 5.23, You have to find the loci points on different angles of dip.
