Here, we have discussed the important topics of the exemplar chapter to provide you with an easy reference before you dive into the diverse variety of questions. It is important that you go through the NCERT Exemplar Solutions before appearing in the exam to score well.

**Introduction:**

Plane figures are categorised by their boundaries and the regions included in them.

**Perimeter of a closed figure:**

The total length of all the boundaries of a closed figure taken only once into consideration is known as its perimeter.

**Perimeter of a rectangle:**

The perimeter of a rectangle is given by the sum of its four sides.

Therefore, Perimeter of the rectangle= length + breadth + length + breadth

I.e. Perimeter of the rectangle= 2 x (length + breadth)

**Perimeter of regular shapes:**

Regular shapes are ones which have all the sides of equal length and all the angles of equal measure.

Perimeter of a square= length + length + length + length = 4 x length

Similarly, Perimeter of an equilateral triangle= side + side + side = 3 x side

In the same way, perimeters of other regular figures such as hexagon and regular pentagon can be calculated.

**Area:**

The amount of surface enclosed by a closed figure is known as the area occupied by the figure.

The area of one full square is taken as 1 square unit. For example, if it is a square sheet of length 1 metre then the area of one square would be 1 sq m.

Therefore, you can measure the area of a figure by counting the number of squares and half squares.

**Area of a rectangle:**

Area of a rectangle = length x breadth

**Area of a square:**

Area of a square= side x side

Thus, we can calculate the number of tiles or bricks required by dividing the total area of the floor by the area of one tile or brick. Following the same concept, the cost of the painting or using bricks or tiles can be calculated by multiplying the total area or number of tiles obtained by the given rate per square unit of area.
