Types of Artificial Magnets

Artificial magnets are made in many shapes. Some of the very common shapes of artificial magnets are as follows –

  • Bar Magnet
  • Cylindrical Magnet
  • Round Magnet
  • Horse Shoe Magnet

Magnetic Materials

Materials that possess the tendency to get attracted to magnets are called magnetic materials. Iron, nickel, and cobalt are examples of magnetic materials as they have magnetic properties and get attracted to magnets. 

Non-Magnetic Materials

Materials that do not have the tendency to get attracted to magnets are called non-magnetic materials. Wood, plastic, and paper are examples of non-magnetic materials as they do not have magnetic properties and do not get attracted to magnets.

Properties of a Magnet

  • Opposite poles of magnets get attracted to each other
  • They attract materials made of nickel, iron, and copper
  • Similar poles of magnets repel each other
  • Every magnet has two poles
  • There is an electromagnetic field around all magnets

Transformation of Iron Strip in Magnet

  • Take a bar magnet and ensure that it is in contact with the strip of iron provided to you.
  • Do not lift the bar magnet while moving it along the iron strip.
  • When you reach the end of the strip only then lift the magnet and again get to the point from where you began the process.
  • Now move the magnet on the same course and in the same manner as you did before.
  • Now repeat the process for forty to fifty more times.

The iron strip will start behaving like a magnet.

Use of Compass to Find Direction

If we analyze a compass, we get to know that every compass shows two directions that are the north and the south direction respectively. Once a person gets to know about these two directions they can easily figure out the west and the east direction. 

The needles of a compass get attracted to the earth’s magnet whose north and south end are the north pole and the south pole. In olden times before the invention of the compass, sailors used to carry a magnet and a thread to find directions. 

They used to tie the magnet to the thread and suspend it vertically, the position of the magnet after the suspension indicated the north and the south direction, after which it was evident for them to navigate through their sea.

The phenomenon of attraction and repulsion

In the case of a magnetic body, the same sides tend to repel each other whereas the opposite side attracts each other. There is always an attraction between the north and the South Pole whereas the north and North Pole or the south and the South Pole repel each other.

In the case of these magnetic bodies, it is possible that both sides would have been either North-North or South-South.
