Separation of Substances: Chapter Introduction

  • We cannot pick grains from fields like we pick fruits, given their large quantities and small size. Therefore, for the separation of such complex mixtures, we employ other methods of separation.
  • We need separation because of the following reasons:
    1. To separate two different, but useful components.
    2. To remove non-useful components.
    3. To remove impurities or harmful components.

The methods of separation discussed below: 

Handpicking

The impurities in the grains of rice, wheat or pulses are generally handpicked. The impurities have to be slightly in large sizes and should be present in small amounts to employ the process of handpicking for separation.

Threshing

The grains of crops being in large numbers cannot be plucked and hence, are beaten after being dried in the sun to separate the grains from the stalks. Threshing can be done by manual labour, bullocks, and machines.

Winnowing

Winnowing is the process when a mixture is of two components of different weights. The heavier component is separated from the lighter component by dropping it in front of blowing air. The heavier components fall closer while the lighter components are blown away by the wind such as husk that can be used as fodder for cattle.

Sieving

Fine particles of a mixture can be separated from bigger impurities by passing it through the holes of a sieve. This method is known as sieving.

Sedimentation, Decantation & Filtration

When the heavier particles settle down in the water, it is called Sedimentation. Decantation is the process of separating the top layer of fluid once the mixture is left quiet to segregate. Filtration is the process when the fluid is passed through filter paper or strainer in some cases.

Evaporation is used to obtain salts from seawater. A solution becomes saturated when no more solvent can be dissolved in it.

In some cases, more than one method of separation is needed to be used to achieve the desired result. For instance, if we have to separate a mixture of flour and salt and not enough water is added for the salt to dissolve, the solution will become saturated and the method of separation that we employ would not remain productive.
