Topics in NCERT Exemplar Class 7 Science Solutions Chapter 13 – Motion and Time
Introduction to Motion
Motion is the change in position that is incurred by an object with respect to time. The different types of motions are motion in a straight line, circular and periodic motion. To decide if an object is fast or slow, we compare the distance covered by the moving object with respect to a given time frame.
When an object covers a certain distance in a given unit of time, we term it as the speed with which the object was moving. Therefore, the more the distance covered in the given time, the faster is the speed of the object.
Uniform and Non-Uniform Motion
If the speed of an object changes while it is in motion in a straight line, it is known as non-uniform motion while if remains constant, the motion is said to be uniform in nature.
When a pendulum does to and fro motion after being released from a certain height, it is known as periodic motion. The time taken to complete one cycle of periodic motion is known as its time period.
Units of Time and Speed
- Time: The SI Unit of time is second denoted by s. Other units are minutes, hours.
- Speed: The SI Unit of speed is m/s, other units can be m/min, or km/hr, etc.
- The symbols for all the units must always be written in the singular form.
Measuring Speed and Distance
In a vehicle, speed is displayed by the speedometer and has the unit km/hr.
The distance covered by a vehicle is displayed by the odometer of the vehicle in km.
In a distance-time graph, the x-axis represents the time axis and distance is given by the y-axis. The slope of the graph gives the speed of the respective object.
