Important Topics for NCERT Exemplar Class 9 Maths Solutions Chapter 4: Linear Equations in Two Variables

In the earlier class, you have learned about linear equations in 1 variable. In this chapter of NCERT Exemplar, you will get the knowledge about the linear equation to 2 variables. Also, you will know how the solution looks like a cartesian plane. The different topics that are covered in this chapter are listed below.

Linear Equation in 2 variable

An equation that has 2 variables is known as a linear equation in two variables

The general form of linear equation in 2 variables is expressed as ‘ax + by +c=0’. Here ‘a’ and ‘b’ are coefficients ‘c’ is a constant. Also, ‘a’ is not equal to 0 and ‘b’ is not equal to 0. ‘x’ and ‘y’ are variables.

Slope-Intercept Form

Normally the linear equation in 2 variables is written in the slope-intercept form as it is very easy to find the slope of any straight line while you draw the graph of it. The slope-intercept form is ‘y=mx+b’, where ‘m’ is the slope of the line and ‘b’ is the point of intersection of the line with the y-axis.

The Solution of a Linear Equation

There are infinite solutions in the linear equation in 2 variables. Because there are 2 variables the solution comes in an ordered pair form, i.e.{x,y} the solution of the equation is the pair that satisfies the equation.

Graph of a Linear Equation in 2 Variables

In this, you will know about how to draw a table so that you can write the solutions of a given equation and then you can plot them all on the cartesian plane. By joining all the coordinates you will get the line of the equation.

Some Important Points for NCERT Exemplar problems of Chapter 4

  • Linear equation in 2 variables has may solutions
  • The graph of every linear equation with 2 variable is a straight line  y=0 is the equation of x-axis and x=0 is the equation of y-axis
  •  The graph of x =a is a straight line that is parallel to the y-axis
  • The graph of y=a is a straight line that is  parallel to the x-axis
  • An equation which is of type y=mx basically represents the line passes through the origin.
  • Every solution of linear equations in 2 variables is a point on the graph of linear equations
