The Universal Law of Gravitation

Gravitation refers to a force of attraction. Every object in the universe attracts another object by using a force called attraction. The universal law of gravitation or law of gravitation refers to the attraction of forces between two objects.

Freefall

Freefall is the downward motion of an object under the force of gravity. It can be easily understood by taking an example of skydiving, or an object thrown upward will always come downwards. 

Mass

The mass of an object is a measure of its inertia. The greater the mass the greater will be the inertia. The mass of an object is constant and does not change from place to place

Weight

  • Earth attracts every object with a certain force depending upon its mass and acceleration.
  • The weight of an object is the force on the basis of which it is attracted to the earth.
  • W = m*g, where w stands for weight, m is mass and g is gravity.

Thrust and Pressure

  • This theory explains certain questions like- how a camel runs faster in a desert? Or hoe a heavy army tank just rest upon a set of chains? It explains that the force acts perpendicular to the surface.
  • The force acting on an object perpendicular to the surface is called a thrust
  • Pressure = thrust/area
  • buoyancy – it is a force that is applied upward by fluids when an object is partially or fully immersed in a fluid.
  • Why do objects float or sink placed on the surface of the water? It is due to the buoyant law.

Archimedes Principle

  • The principle states that the weight of the object immersed in water is equal to the weight of the fluid that is displaced by the object. 
  • The Archimedes principle is a law of basic fluid mechanics.

Relative Density

  • Relative density is the ratio of the mass of the given object and the density of a standard that may be water, gas, etc
  • Relative density = density of a substance/density of water
