  • What Happens to an Acid or a Base in a Water Solution

 

Here you will learn that acids and bases are dissolved in water (exothermic process) to make their solutions of different strengths. It also tells you that the strengths of any acidic or basic solution will depend upon the number of respective ions furnished into the solution (H+ ions by acids and OH ions by bases). 

 

  • How Strong are Acid or Base Solutions

 

This portion of the chapter tells you that pH is used for measuring the concentration of hydrogen ion in a solution. You can measure pH generally from 0 (very acidic), 7 (neutral) to 14 (very alkaline). Here you will also learn that with a rise in pH value from 7 to 14, there is a rise in OH ion concentration in the solution, i.e. a rise in the strength of alkali.

  • Salts 

 

This chapter explains that salts are an essential class of compounds. The most frequently observed salt in our daily lives is the common salt (NaCl). This is an essential part of cooking and also used as a starting material for the production of sodium hydroxide. Here you will learn that bleaching powders, and baking soda, are the other commonly used salts. Some of the salts bind with water molecules known as the water of crystallization, which is present in a fixed number per formula unit of the salt molecule.
