This chapter teaches you that the general physical properties of metals differentiating them from non-metals are metallic lustre, hardness (varies from metal to metal), malleability, ductility, considerable conduction of heat and electricity. Further, it also tells you that non-metals are usually non-lustrous, soft, mostly found in gaseous and liquid states, and poor conductors of heat and electricity. Although there are some exceptions. An example of an exception to the physical properties is that metals lead and mercury both are poor conductors of heat.

  • Chemical properties of metals

This chapter tells you that metals burn in air to give basic (Na2O) or amphoteric oxides (Al2O3). Metals also react with water to give metal oxide or hydroxide and hydrogen gas. Some active metals show more violent reactions with water. Some react with dilute acids to corresponding salts and hydrogen gas. Some react with the solutions of less reactive metals and displace the less reactive metal, according to their place in reactivity series.

  • How do metals and non-metals react

One of the examples is, cinnabar (HgS), an ore of mercury which is first heated in air to convert it into mercuric oxide (HgO) then reduced to mercury on further heating.

Next, you learn that metals in the middle of the activity series are usually present as sulphides or carbonates in nature which are converted into metal oxides prior to extraction by using suitable processes of roasting or calcination and finally the metal oxides are reduced to the corresponding metals by using suitable reducing agents. 

Chapter 3 further tells you that highly reactive metals are obtained by electrolytic reduction as carbon cannot reduce their oxides.

This portion of the chapter deals with the method of electrolytic refining used for obtaining metals in their purest forms.

  • Corrosion and prevention of corrosion

This portion of the chapter tells you that metals react with atmospheric oxygen in the presence of moisture known as the process of corrosion. It further tells you about the methods of preventing corrosion such as painting, oiling, greasing, galvanizing, chrome plating, anodizing, or making alloys.
