Topics Covered in NCERT Solutions for Class 11 Chemistry Chapter 14- Environmental Chemistry

CBSE Class 11 Chemistry NCERT Chapter 14 ‘ Environmental Chemistry’ encompasses a diverse number of topics. Each topic holds a relevant position in the exam’s perspective. Environmental Chemistry is a branch of the Chemistry Subject that focuses on the effects of chemicals on our environment. Here is a brief explanation of some of the most important concepts that have been dealt with in this chapter.

Environmental Pollution

Environmental pollution refers to the undesirable changes that cause harmful effects on the environment. Pollutant refers to a particle or a substance that causes pollution.

Atmospheric Pollution

Atmospheric pollution related to pollution in the atmosphere is due to the release of harmful materials or chemicals.

Tropospheric Pollution

Tropospheric pollution occurs due to the presence of undesirable gaseous particles along with the solid particles in the troposphere. The lowest region of the atmosphere refers to the troposphere. The gaseous pollutants include oxides, nitrogen, carbon, hydrocarbons, etc. Some examples of solid particles are smoke, fumes and dust, etc.

Stratospheric Pollution

In simple terms, stratospheric pollution refers to the depletion of the ozone layer by certain harmful gases and compounds such as CFCs, Nitrogen oxides, etc. The depletion of the Ozone layer can cause major effects like sunburn, skin cancer, killing and damage of phytoplankton and fish, to name a few.

Water Pollution

Water pollution is caused by the pollutants’ presence in the water bodies. Some causes of water pollution include industrial waste, pathogens, organic wastes et al. Some of the major water pollutants include pesticides, sediments, plant nutrients and micro-organisms to name a few.

Industrial Standards of Drinking Water

When it comes to drinking water, lead can contaminate it when it is transported in the lead pipes. The upper limit of lead present in drinking water is 50 ppb. Sulphate too should be at a moderate level. The acceptable level is 500ppm. Also, a proper concentration of fluoride should be present in your drinking water. 1ppm is the amount of fluoride that should be present in the water you drink. Nitrate should not be more than 50 ppm in your drinking water.

Strategies for Controlling Environmental Pollution

Some strategies include- separating biodegradable waste from non-biodegradable waste, wastes of landfills should be converted into compost, toxic wastes should be destroyed and recycling wastes must be focused at.

Green Chemistry

Green Chemistry refers to the production of chemical products or processes that reduce the generation of hazardous materials. In simple words, it relates to the production of environmentally friendly materials that reduce the use of chemical pollutants.
