Important Topics for NCERT Solution for Class 11 Mathematics Chapter 1 – Sets

To understand the NCERT Solutions for Class 11 Maths Chapter 1, you first need to learn what Sets actually are? Sets are a collection of well-defined elements or objects. By well-defined, it means that any cluster which can be easily and perfectly defined, e.g.- total students of class 11, list of first prime-ministers of countries around the world, the total number of fingers, etc.

Sets are usually depicted through the two curly brackets: {…} and, we write the well-defined elements inside these two curly brackets. One of the most significant points to be noted is that one item in a set is written only once, or we can include two similar items by making some distinction between the two.

Further, the chapter describes the representation of sets and also includes the exercises relating to the conversion of the Roster/Tabular Form to the Set-Builder Form and vice-versa.

The sets are represented by either – (i) Roster Method / Tabular Form

(ii) Set Builder Form

The method of writing all the elements of a set within the bracket is called the Roster/Tabular Form. On the other hand, writing the characteristics of a particular set is called the Set Builder Form.

Chapter 1 of Class 11 Maths also deals with the types of Sets. There are four types of Sets, namely (i) Empty Sets (ii) Finite and Infinite Sets (iii) Equal Sets (iv) Singleton Set.

The next topic in this chapter is Sub-Set. Let us understand subsets with an example. Let’s take a Set, x= {1,2, 3 …., 10}, and another set y= {2,4,6,8,10}.

So, we can clearly see that the elements of set y come under the first set that is x. Hence, it can be concluded that y is a subset of x.

Other topics included in this chapter are Power Sets, Interval as Subset of Real Line, Types of Interval, Assumption of Universal Sets, Operation of Sets, Union of Two Sets and its Properties, Venn Diagram (establishes the relation between Sets, be it between Sub-sets or Supersets) and Symbols used in Universal Sets.

At the last, this chapter contains questions relating to the intersection of the two sets and their properties, properties of Union and Intersection, the difference of two Sets and the Properties, Complement of A Set and its Properties, Disjoint Sets, etc.
