Circle

  • When radius is r and centre is h, k, then the equation is (x-h)2+ (y-k)2=r2 When radius is r and centre (0, 0) then the equation is x2+y2= r2
  • Equation is (x-x1) (x-x2) + (y-y1) (y-y2) =0, when ends of diameter are x1, y1 and x2, y2.

Parabola

Every point on the plane which is situated at an equal distance from a fixed point on the plane as well as a fixed-line on the plane is called a parabola.

Equation of parabola: (a2 + b2) [(x – x1)2 + (y – y1)2] = (ax + by + c)2 in which S(x1, y1) is focus of parabola and ax + by + c = 0 is the directrix of the parabola.

Ellipse

When the sum of the distance of all points from two particular points on the plane is constant that is when an ellipse is formed.

Two forms of the ellipse:

  • x2/a2+ y2/b2= 1
  • x2/b2+ y2/a2= 1

Hyperbola 

When the difference of the distance of all points from the two particular points on the plane is constant that is when a hyperbola is formed.

Two forms of a hyperbola:

  • x2/a2– y2/b2= 1
  • x2/b2-y2/a2=1
