What are Fluids? 

Class 11 Physics NCERT Solutions for Chapter 10 begins with the description of fluids. Fluids are the substances which can flow when an external force is applied to them. Various liquids and gases are examples of fluids. Fluids don’t have any definite shape of their own. But they acquire the shape of the containing vessel. The total force exerted by liquid at rest on a given surface is known as the Thrust of a Liquid. The SI unit of Thrust is Newton. 

Properties of Fluids

This chapter describes further about the two main properties of fluid mechanics namely hydrostatics (when the fluid is at rest) and hydrodynamics (when the fluid is in motion). The normal force exerted by a liquid per unit area of the surface in contact is referred to as Pressure of liquid or Hydrostatic Pressure. 

Laws Related to Fluids 

Important laws related to fluid mechanics have also been discussed in this chapter. The first law is the Pascal’s Law that describes the pressure at a given point in the enclosed liquid in equilibrium transmitted equally in all directions in liquid and to the wall of the apparatus, e.g., the working of a hydraulic jack, hydraulic press, automobiles are based on the Pascal’s Law.

Atmospheric Pressure 

Atmospheric pressure is an integral part of the fluid mechanics that have been explained in this chapter. The pressure exerted by the atmosphere on earth is atmospheric pressure. Atmospheric pressure is about 100000 N/m2, which is equal to a weight of 10 tones on 1m2. The atmospheric pressure doesn’t crush our body because the pressure of the blood flowing through the circulatory system balances this pressure. It is also measured in torr and bar. An Android barometer is used to measure atmospheric pressure.

Buoyancy

A particular force which forms a very important part for understanding the mechanics of fluid is the Buoyancy. It is a force that comes into play when the body is partially or fully immersed in a fluid. The buoyant force acts at the centre of gravity of the liquid displaced by the immersed part of the body. And, this point is called the centre buoyancy. Further, this chapter also includes in it the most popular Archimedes Principles and the Laws of Floatation.
