The Lost Spring Summary: Class 12 English Flamingo
In this chapter of NCERT Solutions for Class 12, there are two short stories about poor children in India. The first story is about a ragpicker Saheb who lives in the Seemapuri area of Delhi. The story talks about the miserable lives of rag pickers who are actually a group of people from Bangladesh who migrated to India in search of livelihood. Now, they had to pursue being ragpickers because of food.
However, the story highlights a big difference between adults and children of the community. While for adults rag-picking is a means of survival, for children it is like mining gold. Children find it wonderful and adventurous as every day they find something new from the garbage. Sometimes, even a one rupee coin or a ten-rupee note.
Then, the story highlights another ugly truth of these children’s lives. These children have to become adults in their childhood and find something for their survival. Just like Saheb, who had to leave rag-picking, a job in which he was his own master and he had to take up a job at a tea stall which fed him 800 rupees and all his meals. In the age of going to school and gaining an education, these poor children have to pick up jobs. They are deprived of their basic rights.
The second story is about Mukesh who belongs to a family of bangle makers in Firozabad. His family is orthodox and has been carrying on the profession of bangle making for years. However, this profession does not pay them any good and they are living in poverty. They do not want to get into the vicious circle of middlemen as they fear that it would get them into trouble.
Despite the stressful situation of the family, Mukesh wants to choose a different profession of being a motor Mechanic. Mukesh wants to be his own master and not get into the family business as it got them nothing but poverty.
The bangle makers have to work in hazardous conditions such as small rooms with dim lights and no fresh air. This can be very hazardous for their health. They may even lose their eyesight. There is an irony depicted in this story. Bangles are considered auspicious in India especially for married Indian women. Despite being valued they are created in a hazardous environment.

This chapter describes the miserable condition of poor children in India and how they have to work in order to survive and support the families at a time when they should be studying and building their bright futures.
