The Tiger King Summary: Class 12 English Vistas
NCERT Solutions for Class 12 English Vistas Chapter 2 is a satire written by Ramaswamy Aiyer Krishnamurthy (Kalki). This chapter uses humour and irony to describe the behaviour of those people who are in power. The summary of The Tiger King has been divided into 5 sections.
Part 1: The born of Tiger King and the Prophecy
The Tiger King was born in the hour of the ‘bull’ and the astrologers predicted that the child would eventually die and a tiger would be the cause of his death. However, the Tiger king showed courage, strength, and bravery since he was a child as if he was prepared to face the tigers already.
Part 2: Hundredth Tiger would be the cause of King’s Death
As soon as the Tiger King got a chance to rule the kingdom, he decided to hunt down all the tigers. However, the astrologer told him that he may kill ninety-nine tigers anyhow but should be very careful with the hundredth tiger as that tiger would be the cause of his death.
Part 3: Tiger King’s only Goal
The Tiger King had only one goal in mind, to kill a hundred tigers and false the prophecy. He neglected his kingdom’s other needs, he even spent three lakh rupees to avoid a British officer hunting tigers in his kingdom. He married for the third time to a girl because there were tigers in her kingdom that he could kill.
Part 4: Hunt for the Hundredth Tiger
The Tiger King could somehow manage to kill 99 tigers but, finding the hundredth tiger was getting difficult for him. He thought nothing but about finding that tiger that he became unsympathetic with his own kingdom. He used to scold his subordinates very much just because they were not able to find the tiger. Even when he found that hundredth tiger, he missed the shot at him and assumed that the tiger was killed. His subordinates killed the tiger when he left but never told that to him.
Part 5: The Irony
Assuming that the prophecy has now been proved untrue, the Tiger King went on with his life. Once he bought a low quality wooden tiger from a local shop in his kingdom that his child liked. Then, one day as the king and his son were playing with that wooden tiger, one of its silver linings hurt the king’s hand. The king did not bother about it and then within four days, his whole arm got infected because of that. Many doctors were called but they could not save the Tiger King. At last, the prophecy came true.
