Electromagnetic waves 

NCERT Class 12 Physics Chapter 12 will play a very important role in your understanding of the electromagnetic waves and their existence. You will learn that the electromagnetic waves are produced through the accelerated charges which radiate these waves. This phenomenon is based on the theory given by a scientist named Maxwell. 

According to the theory given my Maxwell, the electric and the magnetic fields in an electromagnetic wave are perpendicular to each other and are in the direction of the propagation of the wave. These electromagnetic waves also carry energy and momentum just like the nature of other waves. Light is an example of an electromagnetic wave. 

The difference in various kinds of electromagnetic waves is a result of the variations they have on the basis of their wavelengths, their frequencies and the modes of interaction they have with the matter. 

Electromagnetic Spectrum 

The electromagnetic waves exist in numerous forms which have a separate electromagnetic spectrum. In this chapter, you will learn that the electromagnetic spectrum includes the visible light, the gamma rays, the x rays, radio waves, the microwaves, the ultraviolet rays and the infrared waves. 

This classification of waves has been carried out on the basis of their frequencies, and this frequency is also the reason for the specific placement of these waves on the spectrum. This classification is also on account of the way in which these waves are produced and the means in which they are detected. 

The frequencies of different electromagnetic waves are given as – 

  1. Radio waves – more than 0.1 m
  2. Microwave – o.1 m to 1 mm
  3. Infrared waves – 1 mm to 700 mm
  4. Light – 700 mm to 400 mm
  5. Ultraviolet rays – 400 mm to 1 mm
  6. X rays – 1 mm to 0.001 mm
  7. Gamma rays – less than 0.001 mm
