NCERT CBSE Class 6 Maths Chapter 14

  • Introduction

NCERT Solutions for Class 6 Maths Chapter 14 – Practical Geometry introduces you to the tools and methods for drawing geometrical shapes on paper. It also tells you about the different tools being used for making lines, arcs, angles, etc.

  • The Circle

This part of the chapter teaches you that every point on the boundary of a circle is at an equal distance from its centre. It teaches you in detail and in a step by step manner about the construction of a circle when its radius is known.

  • Line Segments

This part of the chapter starts with reminding you that a line segment has two endpoints, which make it possible to measure its length with a ruler. It also teaches you the following.

  • Construction of a line segment of a given length

This section of the chapter tells you how to draw a line using a ruler only. It also teaches you how a compass is used to construct a line segment of a given length. All of this has been explained in a step by step format.

  • Constructing a copy of a given line segment

This part of the chapter tells that using a ruler and tracing paper for making a copy of a line drawn already may not be very effective and full proof. It further teaches you to use the compass and ruler to make a copy of the line in 4 steps.

  • Perpendiculars

This part of the chapter teaches you that if two lines are such that they intersect at right angles, they are known as perpendicular to each other. It asks you to look for perpendicular lines around you and do a paper folding activity to understand the same. Some important concepts covered in this section are as follows.

  • Perpendicular to a line through a point on it

This part of the chapter teaches you the concept of drawing a perpendicular to a line through a point on the first line by paper folding activity. It further teaches you about drawing a perpendicular line with a ruler and a compass in 4 steps. Another optional method of using a ruler and a set-square for drawing perpendicular is mentioned in this part.

  • Perpendicular to a line through a point not on it

This portion introduces you to the idea of drawing perpendicular to an existing line l through a point P not lying on it, by a simple paper folding method. Further, a convenient and accurate method for doing the above is explained using a ruler-compass in 4 steps. Another optional method of using a ruler and a set-square is also covered here.

  • The perpendicular bisector of a line segment

This part of the chapter introduces you to the idea of perpendicular bisector. When we need to divide a line into two parts of equal length, we can draw another line through the middle of the line segment, which is at a right angle to it. The initial activities of paper folding and tape sticking introduces the idea to you. Further, the construction of a perpendicular bisector using a ruler and a compass is explained in 4 steps.

  • Angles

This portion of the chapter covers many sub-topics important from the exam standpoint. They have been listed below.

  1. Constructing an angle of a given measure

This portion of the chapter teaches you how to draw an angle of a particular measure using a protractor in 4 steps.

  1. Constructing a copy of an angle of unknown measure

This portion of the chapter tells you how to make a copy of a given angle A, whose measure we do not know. The method is described in 6 steps using a straight edge of the given angle and a compass.

  1. Bisector of an angle

This portion of the chapter tells you about angle bisector, which divides an angle into two equal parts, hence introducing an element of symmetry in the given angle. The method for making an angle bisector using ruler and compass is explained in 3 steps.

  1. Angles of special measures

This part of the chapter gives you some elegant and accurate methods to construct some angles of special measures which do not require the use of the protractor such as 90o, 60o, 30o, and 120o
