**Exponents –**

The short notation 10^{4} stands for the product 10×10×10×10. Here ‘10’ is called the base and ‘4’ the exponent. The number 10^{4} is read as 10 raised to the power of 4 or simply as the fourth power of 10. 10^{4} is called the exponential form of 10,000

**Laws of Exponents – **

**Multiplying Powers With the Same Base**

When the base is the same, the powers by which the numbers are multiplied are added together to the result.

For example 2^{3} x 2^{4} = 2^{7}

If the base is any non-zero integer, and the powers are whole numbers, then to multiply powers with the same base, we have to add the powers to the same base to get the result.

**Dividing Powers by the Same Base**

In this case, we subtract the powers. If the base is any non-zero integer and the powers of the number divided (numerator) and the divisor (denominator) are whole numbers, then to divide powers with the same base, we have to subtract the powers of the denominator from the power of the numerator. Apply to the same base to get the result.

The result will be equal or greater than one if the power of the numerator is greater than the power of the denominator. If it is the other way around it will be a negative power in the numerator which will be a number in decimals as we will study ahead.

**Taking Power of a Power**

Power of power implies multiplying the powers. So the base that has a power to a power applied is equal to the base to the power of the product of the two powers.

**Multiplying Powers With the Same Exponents**

Here we are considering the case where the base is different but the exponent is the same. We multiply the base and keep the exponent the same to get the result.

**Dividing Powers With the Same Exponents**

We divide the base in this case and keep the same exponent to get the result.

**Numbers with Exponent Zero**

Any non-zero number whose exponent is zero is always equal to one.

10^{0} = 1

10^{1} = 10

10^{2} = 100 and so on

When the power or exponent is zero the answer is 1

As power increases, the zeroes increase by the same number.

1/10^{1} = 0.1

1/10^{2} = 0.01

If the same powers increase in the divisor the zeros after the decimal increase.

**Expressing Large Numbers in the Standard Form**

Any number can be expressed as a decimal number between 1.0 and 10.0 including 1.0 multiplied by a power of 10. Such a form of a number is called its standard form.

The advantage of using a standard form is that it is universally understood and accepted. A comparison of large numbers is possible by first representing them in the standard form.

For example, if we compare the mass of the Earth and the mass of Uranus, let us check their value in the standard form

Mass of the earth = 5.97 x 10^{24} kg.

Mass of Uranus = 8.68 x 10^{25} kg

Since the mass of Uranus has a higher exponent it is greater in value.
