A proper fraction is a part of the whole. It is represented by a numerator which is the part and denominator which is the whole. Decimal is another way of representing fractions. 

How Well Have You Learnt About Fractions

An improper fraction has a bigger numerator than the denominator which means there is a part added to a whole. Divide the numerator by the divided to get the remainder. When this remainder is less than the denominator, you get the number of whole parts as an integer and the remainder becomes a proper fraction. Together the integer and the proper fraction is also called as mixed fraction. 

Multiplication of Fractions – 

  • Multiplication of a Fraction by a Whole Number

For both proper and improper fractions, the method of multiplication of a fraction by a whole number is the same. Multiply the whole number with the numerator and leave the denominator as it is to get your answer. 

  • Multiplication of a Fraction by a Fraction 

To get your answer simply multiply the numerators to get the new numerator and denominators to get the new denominator. The product of two fractions is smaller in value than any of the fractions multiplied.

Division of Fractions – 

  • Division of a Whole Number by a Fraction

Let us first understand reciprocals. Non-zero fractions whose product with each other is 1 are called reciprocal numbers. In other words, if you interchange the numerator and the denominator of a fraction you get the reciprocal of that fraction. 

To divide a whole number by a fraction, multiply the whole number with the reciprocal of that fraction.

Remember, when you are dealing with a mixed fraction convert it first into an improper fraction. 

  • Division of a Fraction by a Whole Number

To get the answer the denominator is multiplied by the whole number. To understand the process, write the whole number as a fraction that is the whole number becomes the numerator and one becomes the denominator. Then write the reciprocal so one becomes the numerator and the whole number becomes the denominator. Now multiply the fraction by the reciprocal.

Once again, always remember that whenever you are dealing with a mixed fraction, first convert it into an improper fraction. 

  • Division of a Fraction by Another Fraction

The same process is to be applied again. Find the reciprocal of the fraction by which you are supposed to divide. Then multiply this reciprocal with the fraction that you want to divide.  

  • How Well Have You Learnt About Decimal Numbers

Recall your learning of place values in earlier classes. Ones, Tens, Hundreds and so on. Similarly, for decimals, it is Ones, Tenths (1/10), Hundredths (1/100) and so on. 

  • Multiplication of Decimal Numbers 

Decimal is a different way of writing a fraction. Therefore, as we studied fractions, the multiplication of two decimals will result in a decimal value smaller than the previous ones. 0.1 x 0.1 = 0.001

To multiply two decimal numbers, first, multiply them as whole numbers without considering the decimals. Count the number of digits to the right of the decimal in the first number and similarly the number of digits to the right of the decimal in the second number. Add the two counts. Now in the answer go to the rightmost digit and move left the number of counts. Place the decimal there to get your final answer.

  • Multiplication of Decimal Numbers by 10, 100, and 1000

This is simple. 10 has one zero. So the answer will be the same decimal number but the decimal will move one place to the right. 0.01 x 10 = 0.1

 100 has two zeroes so the shift to the right is two places. For 1000 the decimal shifts to the right will be three places. 

    1. x 1000 = 10

Going a step forward for 10000 the shift to the right will be 4 places and so on. 

Division of Decimal Numbers

  • Division by 10, 100, and 1000

We just studied in the multiplication of decimal numbers to shift to the right as many places as the number of zeroes. In division it is the opposite, we shift to the left as many places as the number of zeroes. 

  • Division of a Decimal Number By a Whole Number

– Write the whole number as a fraction which means numerator is the whole number and denominator is one. 

– Write the reciprocal of this. 

– Divide the decimal number by the reciprocal. Now count the digits to the right of the decimal in the decimal number.

– The answer should also have the same number of digits to the right of the decimal. 

  • Division of a Decimal Number by Another Decimal Number

– Convert both the decimal numbers into Fractions. To do this the number in the denominator should have as many zeroes following 1 as the number of digits to the right of the decimal. 5.22 is 522 in the numerator and 100 in the denominator. 

– Now there is no decimal and the two fractions can be multiplied by the process of multiplication of fractions to get the answer
