  • Introduction

CBSE NCERT Class 8 Science Chapter 4 starts with a general introduction of the topic, followed by detailed discussions. It tells us what metals and non-metals are and informs us about the various properties and uses of metals and non-metals.

  • Physical Properties of Metals and Non-metals

this part of the NCERT Class 8 Science Chapter 4 establishes that certain materials are lustrous, hard, sonorous, good conductors of electricity and heat, ductile and malleable. The materials that usually have these properties have been termed as metals. Some metal examples are Iron, Aluminium, Copper, Magnesium and Calcium.

This section also teaches us about materials that break into a powdery substance on beating with a hammer, are bad conductors of electricity and heat and not sonorous. Such materials are known as non-metals. Some examples of non-metals are carbon, phosphorus, oxygen, and sulphur.

  • Chemical Properties of Metals and Non-metals

This part of the NCERT Class 8 Science Chapter 4 deals with the various chemical reactions of metals and non-metals.

  • Reaction with Oxygen

This section teaches you that when metals are burnt, they react with oxygen and create metal oxides that are elementary in nature. Non-metals react with oxygen to produce non-metallic oxides that have acidic properties. This property is responsible for rusting of Iron and tarnishing other metallic items.

  • Reaction with Water

When some metals come in contact with water, react and produce metal hydroxides and hydrogen gas. Some metals react vigorously with water like Sodium, and some react slowly like Iron. Generally, when non-metals come in contact with water, they don’t react. Some non-metals like phosphorus are stored in water in order to prevent their reaction with air. 

  • Reactions with acids

This part of the NCERT CBSE Class 8 Science Chapter 4 establishes that when metals come in contact with acids, they react with acids and create hydrogen gas and metal salts. The released hydrogen gas is identified with the ‘pop’ sound. Usually, non-metals are not reactive to acids.

  • Reactions with bases

Some metals react with bases and produce hydrogen gas again identified with the pop sound.

  • Displacement Reactions

Some metal displaces other metals from its compound in aqueous solution. A common reaction of this type is –

Copper Sulphate (CuSO4) + Zinc (Zn) → Zinc Sulphate (ZnSO4) + Copper (Cu)

(Blue) (Colourless) (Red)

Further, you also come to know here that the reaction given above would not take place the other way, i.e. Copper will not replace Zinc from its solution. So, the rule is that a more reactive metal can substitute a less reactive metal, but a less reactive one cannot substitute a more reactive metal. 

  • Uses of Metals and Non-metals

This part of the NCERT CBSE Class 8 Science Chapter 4 mentions some uses of metals and non-metals in everyday life. Metals can be used for the creation of automobiles, machinery, trains, aeroplanes, industrial gadgets, satellites, water boilers, and cooking utensils. Non-metals are used in fertilisers, in the process of water purification, in antiseptic solutions, and in crackers. Oxygen is an essential non-metal that we use for breathing.
