Summary of NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Maths Chapter 15

Introduction:

  1. Various Mathematicians in the 17th century contributed to the development of Probability independently such as Blaise Pascal, Pierre de Fermat etc.
  2. We will get learn the chances of a particular outcome that might occur in an experiment in Probability.
  3. When we get one or several outcomes in an experiment or an event, it is known as a trial.
  4. An event for an experiment is the collection of some outcomes of the experiment. We will learn a more technical definition of an event in higher classes.
  5. We find the experimental or empirical probability based on the outcomes of our trials.

If n is the total of trials for an Event E, then the probability is given as,

P(E) = (Number of trials in which the event happened / The total number of trials)

  1. The probability of an event will always lie between 0 and 1 including 0 or 1. A probability of 0 would mean that there is no chance that the event might occur whereas a probability of 1 would mean there is a 100% chance that the event will occur.
  2. You can relate to and use the concept of probability in various daily life examples and hence, arrive at almost accurate decisions.
  3. The concept of probability can be understood with the help of various activities. For example, if we toss a coin 10 times and note down our observations to obtain the fraction of the number of times heads came up and the fraction of the number of times tails came up with respect to the total number of times the coin was tossed. We will find that the fractions will nearly be equal to 0.5 displaying the probability of occurrence of these events.
  4. You can also try repeating the activity by tossing the coin for a greater number of times and then observe the results for the same.
  5. Similarly, you can also achieve results of events occurring while throwing a die by finding the fraction of the number of times a number (out of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) would have occurred with respect to the total number of times the die is rolled.
  6. You will find the result is approximately equal to ⅙ in these cases which is the probability that the event might occur.
