## Class 10 Maths Coordinate Geometry

• Distance Formula

Here you learn how to find the distance between two points without actually measuring the distance. The points are imagined to be on a coordinate axis first, and then the Pythagoras theorem is applied to do the calculations.

The distance formula for the distance between the points P(x1, y1) and Q(x2, y2) is given as –

• Section Formula

Here you learn how to divide a line of known length into two parts where the parts are in a given ratio. This is also done by placing the points on an imaginary coordinate axis, drawing perpendicular lines from those point to one of the axes and then applying the similarity of Triangle criteria.

• Area of a Triangle

Here you learn an alternative procedure to calculate the area of a Triangle. The given Triangle is imagined to be placed on a coordinate axis with its vertices placed at points A, B and C where A (x1, y1), B (x2, y2) and C (x3, y3). Then perpendicular lines from these vertices are drawn to the x-axis to form 3 corresponding trapezia, where the area of D ABC = area of trapezium ABQP + area of trapezium APRC – the area of trapezium BQRC. Solving all the trapezia for their areas, you can calculate the area of a Triangle.
