Class 10 Maths Polynomials

Class 10 Maths Polynomials discusses the details all aspects related to Polynomials. Some of the significant topics covered in this chapter have been given below.

  • Algebraic Expression

This part of RD Sharma Class 10 Maths Chapter 2 – Polynomials explains that the algebraic expression is a mixture of constants and variables and includes mathematical operators. Here you shall also learn that an algebraic expression, also known as the building blocks of expressions are nothing but the sum of terms. It is not mandatory for the algebraic expression to have two or three terms; it can also have more than that.  This section also teaches you the meaning of the term coefficient.

An example of an algebraic expression is 8x2y+9xy+2x+3

The above expression is the sum of four terms 8x2y, 9xy, 2x and 3.

  • Polynomial

This section of the chapter explains how an algebraic expression is also called a polynomial where the exponent on any variable is a whole number.

An example of a polynomial is 5x3 + 3x + 1. This is also an algebraic expression.

6x+2√x is an algebraic expression, but it is not a polynomial. As the exponent on x is 1/2, which is a fraction but not a whole number.

  • Degree of Polynomial

In this part of RD Sharma Class 10 Maths Solutions Chapter 2-Polynomials, you will know that the highest exponent on the variable in a polynomial is known as the degree of a polynomial. You shall understand that the various types of polynomials and they are classified based on:

  1. Number of terms
  2. Degree of the Polynomial

  • Types of Polynomial

This section of the chapter teaches you that based on the number of terms the polynomials are classified as:

  1. Monomial
  2. Binomial
  3. Trinomial

  • Types of Polynomial based on the degree

This part of RD Sharma Class 10 Maths Solutions Chapter 2-Polynomials, tells you that the polynomials can be classified based on the degree in the following.

  1. Linear polynomial
  2. Quadratic polynomial
  3. Cubic polynomial

  • Factorisation of Polynomials

This section of the chapter explains how the middle term is split for factorisation to perform quadratic polynomials.

For Example: Let’s consider 2x2−5x+3
Now, the middle term in the above equation is 5,
If we apply to split the middle term to the above equation, the equation becomes
2x2−2x−3x+3
This equation is further solved by identifying the common factors
2x2−2x−3x+3= 2x(x-1)-3(x-1)
Taking (x−1) as the common factor, this can be expressed as
2x(x−1)−3(x−1)=(x−1)(2x−3)

This chapter also covers the relationship between zeros and coefficients of a polynomial, division algorithm for a polynomial, and some algebraic identities. RD Sharma Class 10 Maths Chapter 2 covers graphical representations of polynomials. It teaches you in details about representing equation on a graph, a geometrical representation of linear polynomial, a geometrical representation of a quadratic polynomial, a graph of a polynomial Xn, zeros of a polynomial and geometrical meaning of zeros of a polynomial.
