Important Topics of Resnick Halliday & Walker Fundamentals of Physics Volume 2 Solutions Chapter 41: Conduction of Electricity in Solids

You know in solids, metals are the most important components and they possess great conductivity in electricity. So, in this chapter, you are going to study these types of conductivity of metals. Apart from this, you will also learn about several important topics under this chapter.

Electrical Properties of Solids-

Well, you know the electrical properties of solids can be imagined only if we know how it conducts!

So, does it conduct?. The answer is yes. But, Are all solids conducting electricity in the same amount?. This time the answer is no.  All solids are not conducting equally; only some of them are conducted in equal amounts. Also, there are some solids who do not conduct at all.

Based on the conductivity, Solid can be divided into three categories-

Conductors-  It’s a material which conducts electricity. In simple words, a material that helps in flowing a current.  But how does conduction take place? The reason is simply that the electrons inside the material started flowing from atom to atom, that leads to conduction.

Some common examples of conductors are –

  • Copper
  • Aluminium
  • Gold
  • Silver

Insulators-  It is in contrast to conductors, semiconductors. Why so? The reason is that it does not have that free of an electron in their materials that can move freely when an external electric field is applied to them.

Some examples of Insulators are-

  •  Plastics
  • Rubber
  • Paper
  • Dry air

Semiconductors- Simply, we can say the semiconductors are the materials, conductivity lies between the conductors and Insulators. In semiconductors, the positive charge carriers holes move opposite to the direction of flow of electrons.

Types of semiconductors-

  •      Intrinsic Semiconductor
  •      Extrinsic semiconductor.

Doping- You know that intrinsic semiconductors are impure forms of semiconductors. It possesses low conductivity that’s why a widely used technique has been used to make intrinsic semiconductor more conductive. What actually this doping technique works?. So, in this, certain impurities, usually trivalent and pentavalent impurities are added upon the intrinsic semiconductor that will create extra holes or free electrons that will help in conductivity.

Phosphorus, Arsenic, Bismuth, and Antimony are the most prominent impurities used in the doping process.

Transistors- Transistors are termed as amplifying circuits. It’s a semiconductor material which is used for amplifying the conductivity of semiconductors to amplify the electric current and voltage across it. It has 3 terminals: Base, Collector, and Ammeter, respectively. They also helped in improving conductivity but not in a big manner.

You can see the terminals in these two types of transistors PNP and NPN –

  • Diodes-

Diodes are nothing, it is an electric component that helps to improve the conductivity of the material. Diodes tend to conduct current in a single direction. It possesses two junctions

There are several types of diodes and we are seeing some of them are-

  • P-n junction diode
  • Schottky diode
  • LED
  • Laser diode.
