Difference Between an Algebraic Expression and a Linear Equation

• An algebraic expression is a combination of variables, constants and operators. For example, 7a2 + 2ab, 6x, 7xy, ⅔a – 8b + 2, all are algebraic expressions.
• A linear equation, on the other hand, involved the ‘equality sign (=)’. For example, 7a + 2ab = 10, 6x + 4y = 28, 7xy + 8x = 34, ⅔a – 8b = 2, all are linear equations.
• However, in a linear equation, the variables have no exponents equal to 1. If we plot the graph of a linear equation, it would be a straight line graph. Hence, the name ‘linear’ is given. So, 2x2 + 2b2 = 4 or 2x2 + 3b = 18 are not linear equations.
• If a linear equation involves only one variable then it is called a linear equation with one variable. For example, 2x – 7 = 3 is a linear equation with one variable while 2x + 3y = 12 is not.
• A linear equation always contains an algebraic expression. The algebraic expression present on the left of the equality sign is called the Left Hand Side or LHS of the linear equation and the expression on the right side of the equality sign is called the Right Hand Side or RHS of the linear equation.
• In a linear equation, LHS is always equal to RHS. However, this is possible only for certain values of the variables. These values for which the LHS of a linear equation equals to its RHS are called ‘solutions’ of the linear equation.

Finding Solutions of Linear Equations in One Variable

• At first, we balance the linear equation and hence we apply arithmetic operations to find out the values of the variable. For example, consider an equation 2x – 7 = 3. To balance the linear equation, we will add 7 to both sides of the equation.

2x – 7 + 7 = 3 + 7

2x = 10

x = 10/2

x = 5

So, x = 5 is the solution of the equation. This method is known as the ‘Balancing Method’ of finding the solution for a linear equation.

• There can be times when the variable is present on both sides of the equation. For example, x + 2 = 2x – 3. In such cases, we will bring all the terms with a variable on one side and the constants on the other side.

x – 2x = – 3 – 2

– x = – 5

x = 5

So, x = 5 is the solution to the equation. This method is known as the ‘Transposing Method’ of finding the solution for a linear equation.
