States of Matter

Characteristics of Particles of Matter

In this chapter, you will come across different states of matter and their characteristics. You will also get to learn that anything that has weight and occupies space is termed as matter. The matter is composed of particles and you will also get to learn about the characteristics of Particles of Matter. Some of these characteristics are –

• The particles of matter have space between them and it is this space which determines whether the matter is solid liquid or gaseous in the state. If there is no or very little space between the particles, they are known as solids, if there is moderate space they are known as liquids and in case of the space is a lot, they are known as liquids.
• Force of attraction between the particles is also a characteristic which decides the orientation of matter. If the force of attraction is very strong, the matter is known as  Solids. In case if the particles attract each other with a relatively moderate force, the state is liquid and if there is a negligible force of attraction between the particles, they are gaseous in nature.

Change in the State of Matter

In this chapter, you will also learn about the different states of matter and their conversion. You will come across the processes like freezing, boiling and vaporization. With the change in conditions like the temperature and pressure, the particles which comprise the matter also tend to undergo changes. You will learn about these changes through the very common example of water and the ways in which it changes state from solid (ice) to liquid and to steam.

Density

In this chapter, you will learn that the density of a substance is the mass per unit volume of that substance. It is one of the characteristic properties through which states of matter can be detected. You will also get to learn that the SI Unit of density is Kg metre3

Effects of Change of Pressure

As discussed earlier, in this chapter you will learn about the changes that occur in the orientation of matter and its states when the conditions are changed. The pressure is amongst the primary factors which tend to cause changes. When the pressure in a liquid increase it turns into solid and when that pressure decreases it turns into its gaseous form.
