Cell 

Since this chapter deals with the fundamental units of life, the first thing that you will come across is the concept of a cell. A cell is a basic component which composes a living body be it plants or animals. In this chapter, you will come across the concepts of cell organelles, animal cells, plant cells, membranes and much more information in detail. You will learn about the different organelles like the Golgi apparatus, the endoplasmic reticulum, the nucleus, the plasma and the mitochondria along with their detailed functions, diagrams and features. 

Plasma Membrane

This is one of the most important terms which you will encounter while studying about life processes. A plasma membrane is the outermost covering of a cell which separates its components from the external environment. It is the gateway with minute pores which allows the entry and exit of selective materials inside and outside the cell. It is also termed as a selectively permeable membrane

Nucleus 

The nucleus is the central component of a cell. It plays a very important role when it comes to reproduction and contains chromosomes which decide the fate of the offspring in terms of their character, appearance and functionality. 

Types of Solutions 

While learning about the membranes, you will also come across processes like diffusion and osmosis which play very important roles in the survival of a cell. You will learn that there are three major kinds of solutions.

  • Isotonic solutions: These solutions have solute concentration the same as the concentration of the cell sap
  • Hypertonic solutions: The concentration of solute in these is greater than that of the cell sap 
  • Hypotonic solutions: The concentration of solute in the case of hypotonic solutions is less than that of the cell sap. 

Active Transport 

In the chapter, you will learn that the movement of molecules against the concentration gradient is a result of active transport. It requires energy in the form of ATP and it is fast and rapid. Active transport allows the movement of large molecules. 

Passive Transport 

You will also learn about the contrast of active transport i.e. the passive transport. It involves the movement of molecules along the concentration gradient and does not require any energy to carry out the process. However, it is slow in comparison to active transport and it allows the movement of small molecules only. 

Asters and Spindle fibres 

In this chapter, you will come across this term ‘asters’ which are two star-like structures radiating fibres from the centrosome. These help in locating spindles and triggering the cytoplasm. The spindle fibres are formed during the process of cell division from the microtubules; their function is to pull apart the chromosomes and bring them to the poles. 

Cell Division 

In this chapter, you will also learn about cell Division. And you learnt about how cells form the basic unit of living organisms you also know that these cells need to divide themselves in order to carry forward the life processes. Cell Division is a very important process for life to go on and for the bodies of living organisms to function. You will learn that there are two types of cell division – Mitosis and Meiosis. 

The process of cell Division which happens only for the cells to grow is termed as mitosis. In this case, the mother cell divides itself and forms two daughter cells which are identical in nature. This cell division helps in growth and repair. 

The process of cell division which happens for reproduction is termed as Meiosis. In this kind of division, the reproductive cells divide in order to form gametes. Then the process of fertilisation takes place which further leads to the rise of an offspring. In the case of Meiosis, you will learn that there are two consecutive divisions. And after the process of division in Meiosis four daughter cells are formed. These cells possess only half of the total number of chromosomes which were present in the mother cell.
