Introduction to Tissues
In this chapter, you will learn that a group of cells which are similar in their structure and work together in order to achieve any particular function is known as tissue. You would have encountered the term “tissue” in your junior classes as well, but here you will deal with it in a detailed manner.
You will deal with numerous types of plant tissues in the course of this chapter. You will deal with the characteristics of these tissues along with their figures and functions. Some of those types are –
Meristematic Tissues – these are issues which are responsible for the growth of plants. In the case of plants, growth occurs in some specific regions and the reason behind this is the presence of meristematic tissues in those portions.
Permanent Tissues – there are cells in plants which after being formed by the meristematic tissue, lose their ability to divide. Such cells continue to do specific roles and become permanent tissues. Permanent tissues are further divided into two kinds – simple permanent tissues and complex permanent tissues.
Simple Permanent Tissues – the layers of cells beneath the epidermis are termed as simple Permanent Tissues. The most common type of simple Permanent is Parenchyma. It consists of cells that are not specialised in any specific task and have a thin cell wall. The work of these tissues is to store food and chlorophyll. These tissues are comprised of single kinds of cells.
Complex Permanent Tissues – unlike the simple Permanent Tissues the complex Permanent Tissues are comprised of different kinds of cells. All of these different kinds of tissues combine together in order to perform a specific task for the organism. Two common examples of complex Permanent Tissues are phloem and xylem. These two tissues are formed from vascular bundles and conducting Tissues.
In this chapter, you will learn that animal tissues are of the following types –
Epithelial Tissues – in animal bodies there is a protective layer formed of tissues and these tissues are known as epithelial tissues. The epithelium covers the maximum portion of our body including our organs and body cavities. The skin is the most prominent example of our body layering formed from the epithelial tissues. These Tissues are tightly packed and exist in the form of a continuous sheet. There is negligible intracellular space between these tissues and they have a very small amount of cementing between them.
Connective Tissues – connective tissues have cells that are packed loosely and are embedded in an intracellular matrix. This matrix can be present in the form of jelly, fluid, rigid or dense. Blood is an example of connective tissues. Bone is also an example of connective tissues in our body.
Muscular Tissues – these tissues are formed from cells that are elongated and are also termed as muscle fibres. These tissues look after the movement of our bodies. They re also known as the skeletal muscles as they are attached to bones in most of the cases. Heart muscles are an example of muscular Tissues.
Nervous Tissues – these tissues are formed of cells which are specialised in reacting to stimulus rapidly. The cells which form the nervous Tissues are known as nerve cells or neurons. The signals that pass through the nerve fibre are known as impulses.
